Seven alleged members of Germany's far-left group face trial over multiple violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group the Antifa Ost network began their trial on Tuesday, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

Global terrorist designation and legal charges

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the group was responsible for targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are allegedly accused of employing hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving seven defendants is scheduled to continue until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G. and Paul M., also face charges for attacks in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honour” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, a different German individual, Maja T, is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Historical background and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigrant youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G as a high-ranking member within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by Paul M, the network reportedly stockpiled tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they may have within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and called on the government in Berlin to follow suit. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or are in custody.”
