People who endured abuse by church officials have voiced fresh optimism following their initial encounter with the new Pope at the Holy See.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, commented that the pontiff's decision to engage with them so early in his leadership sent a strong message about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Approach Advocated

The group is pushing for a worldwide strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is proven of abusing a minor. This policy has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff recognized that there is "opposition in some parts of the globe" to this initiative, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we recognized that there is pushback," they remarked.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who took the role in May, has taken on this persistent problem that has haunted the Church for decades.

Previous efforts to resolve the problem included an unprecedented meeting on child abuse within the Church and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw abuse.

Personal Connection

For Hickey, who prefers gender-neutral pronouns, the drive for worldwide adoption of the measure is deeply meaningful. The Canadian activist revealed they were victimized by a priest who was subsequently moved between different parishes.

"Hopefully this will establish the direction for his leadership, because we aim to collaborate with him," they stated. "Both sides share the common objective, we seek to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which includes survivors and supporters from more than 30 countries, engaged with the Pope in his Vatican office.

The meeting, originally scheduled for 20 minutes, extended to a full hour, during which the religious leader "primarily heard to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was characterized as "quite empathetic" when hearing the account of a woman victimized at a Catholic residential school for native youth in North America.

Hickey added the leader was "tender" about their personal experience and appeared "very humble, funny, and very down to earth."

"Victims have long wanted a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was sincere, practical, and very open and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The group is advocating that revisions to canon law will facilitate the adoption of the zero-tolerance policy worldwide.

They have consulted specialists and gathered materials that they will submit to Pope Leo.

"He seemed interested in reviewing it," they noted.

Accountability Emphasized

A recently released church-ordered report emphasized the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or dismissal of religious officials or personnel in cases of misconduct or negligence."

The document also pointed out that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for bishops and major superiors to be held accountable for inaction and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey shared they told the Pope at the start of their meeting: "This represents as much a risk for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

After the encounter, they expressed hope for progress.

"We realise it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the end of the day, uniting and building a connection and persisting to strengthen that relationship is a step in the correct path," Hickey commented.

Hickey concluded that they told with Pope Leo: "Just because it's a difficult period, I feel like we can alter how the story concludes - he valued that."
